Trial of Barry Newsom (free man of color and apprentice to Peter Edwards)
September 20, 1831 – Superior Court
Berry Newsom an indented [sic] apprentice to Peter Edwards was this day set to the bar in custody of the Jailor of the County (the Court summoned for his examination having failed to meet) and Harry and Henry negro slaves were charged, sworn and examined as witnesses. The Court after hearing the testimony are unanimously of opinion /that the prisoner/ ought to be held for the said offense at the next Current Superior Court to be held for the County and thereupon the prisoner is remanded to jail.
